Last month, we reported that Sony starts a beta program for the new PS5 firmware. Interested parties were able to participate by registering at the official website. Which functions are tested was not yet known at this time.
Since today is known: The registered beta testers may try the internal expansion function, thanks to the help of a M. 2 SSD, the free space can be increased. Sony points out that the specifications can still change until the introduction of the new system software.
Of course, the most important question is which M.2 SSDs are compatible with the PlayStation 5. Then Sony went in detail on the on-site website and counted the technical requirements in detail.
The technical requirements in the overview
- Interface: PCIE GEN4 x4 M.2 NVME SSD
- Capacity: 250GB - 4TB
- Cooling Structure: Using a M.2 SSD with your PS5 console requires effective heat dissipation by a cooling structure, e.g. B. a heat sink. Many drives already have a built-in cooling structure. Otherwise, you can also attach a heat sink to the SSD manually.
- Sequential reading speed: 5,500 MB / S or faster is recommended.
- Form factor: M.2 Type 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280 and 22110. (The first two digits refer to the width, the remaining numbers on the length.)
- Processor base: Socket 3 (key M). The total size including cooling structure is 110mm (L) x 25mm (B) x 11.25mm (H).
- Length: 30mm, 42mm, 60mm, 80mm, 110mm (corresponding to the form factor type).
- Width: 22 mm wide M.2 SSD module required. The overall structure must not exceed 25 mm.
- Height: The total height must be less than 11.25 mm. Below the board, the size must be less than 2.45 milimeters, while it must be less than 8 milimeters above the board.
Whether you decide you for a one-sided or double-sided SSD will leave you. However, M.2-SATA SSDs are not considered.
When exactly the firmware update will appear, was not announced. So far, you have to be patient for a while.
